Here at Ramair we're all into our cars, so whenever we get the chance to use them properly, we grab it with both hands.

Now that the worst of winter is behind us (hopefully!) we joined our warehouse manager, Ed Dobson as he booked a track day with Slip and Grip Automotive. Based at our favourite home circuit Castle Combe, it was a great opportunity to join some likeminded petrol heads and for Ed to give his 106 Rallye a shakedown.

His well maintained and carefully tuned Pug is the ideal tool for the job – it's small, light and packs a decent shove from its 1.6-litre lump on throttle bodies. With quality, track-focused BILSTEIN suspension, uprated brakes and a sticky Toyo R888 rubber, it promised to be a lot of fun on the fast and testing circuit

Having arrived at 9.30am to amazing, sunny weather, the drivers headed for a full briefing. We were impressed to see such a wide range of track machinery.

From stock looking Golf Mk7s, to full-on Lotus Exige track weapons, and lots of Hondas, there was something for everyone.

The great thing about days like this is that you don't need pots of money and a dedicated track car. As our own Ramair team showed, it's not what you drive, but what you do to it (as well as how you drive it, of course).

Aside from Ed's Pug of love, there was a Toyota Corolla which had been stripped out and had bucket seats fitted. It was cheap to buy, easy to fix but still offers plenty of fun – especially when pushed to the limit.

The same can be said of the Alteza, which had some interesting aero at the back (no lower bumper), plus a stripped out interior, uprated suspension, wheels, brakes and more.

An MX5 makes one of the best budget track cars and this one was bullying much more powerful vehicles all day.

All of the car were running the latest PRORAM performance air filters – universal fitment and ideal for more unusual track cars like the Corolla or Altezza. With some hot laps being laid down, it also made for a great test bed to see how the performance filters performed.

With an open pit lane, the action was constant, but everyone was driving within their limits and giving their cars plenty of time to cool down between sessions. Of course, plenty of things needed fixing, too.

A few battle scars were acquired, including Ed's 106 losing a front arch trim, which he fortunately rescued, and the MX5 hitting a wall, but aside from lots of cars needing new tyres and brake pads, it was all good, clean fun.
